For Wysing Inside Out David has been creating a site-responsive installation in an abandoned poly-tunnel over a period of 5 days entitled, Membrane.
The first task of the project was to clear-out the space, which was over grown with weeds and piles of straw bales. Amongst the wild plants lay a variety of un-used garden implements and other such junk. These were initially removed from the space and have since been carefully re-installed to create a new ‘all surrounding’ environment. Every item, including a toilet, a wheel barrow, buckets, forks and netting have been utilised - no other materials or objects have been added.
The new sculptural assemblages, which occupy the space take on figurative narratives and are presented in make-shift arrangements. At once the pieces can seem witty and absurd; scary and threatening. There is an ambiguity to each contraption; each one containing moments of recognition and disgust, which only serves to confound the viewer.
One of the important components of the installation is the actual architectural structure of the poly-tunnel itself; covered in a taught layer of plastic sheeting acting as a kind of membrane or protective cover from the outside world. On the evening 26th SEPTEMBER David will be undertaking a durational ‘live-action’ from within the space to deliberately interfere with the underside of this surface. This will involve an element of piercing or cutting followed by a smearing or rubbing of various body ‘healing’ lotions under the ‘atmospheric’ condition of a single light source.
